DupliGard Overview
What is DupliGard?
DupliGard is a proprietary DVD anti rip copy protection system which helps content owners protect their digital assets.
The system provides a reliable anti rip solution for protecting DVD videos, movies on demand (MOD), premium, corporate or other commercial and sensitive DVD content.
How Does It Work?
DupliGard is a passive anti-rip solution that encapsulates image files on a DVD disc causing access to the content by common ripping programs to be controlled.
The original media content is not modified and play-back quality remains unaffected. This is achieved by introducing copy control encapsulation in areas of the disc that are not read by DVD players during playback.
Copy controlled discs are designed to provide effective speed bump protection from unauthorized casual copying.
Copy controlled discs have full DVD player playability matching that of unprotected DVDRs. Menus, special features and extras are unaffected and remain as the original.
How Do I Apply DupliGard to DVDs?
Copy control is applied through our proprietary software authoring program. Duplication is done on either a PC, for one-off copies, or on a DupliGard multiburner tower (up to 10 writers).
During the duplication process, the custom software adds copy deterrence to existing ISO or DDP image files.
The new encapsulated DVDR copies immediately resist further duplication by the casual end user.
How Effective Is It?
No copy protection is insurmountable; what can be digitally put onto a DVD can also be taken off. Therefore, it is important to set expectations appropriately.
Our goal is to make DVD video copying very difficult for the average person, thereby protecting the rights and profits of copyright holders.
It is intended as a robust yet transparent anti-rip solution that can significantly help to prevent unauthorized copying of discs. Further, it is an upgradable software solution.
New and innovative development continues to ensure that it provides the most reliable, efficient and easy to use anti-rip copy protection solution available.
Has It Been Tested?
Independent external testing has been completed on our DVD Copy Control technology and confirms reliable levels of protection from mass market ripping programs, while also achieving full playability on DVD players.
Security tests by Next Generation Security Software (NGS), an internationally recognized testing company, confirmed that discs burned with our passive authoring software do not load any software onto PC operating systems.
“NGS conclude(s) that there are, in the case of the protected DVDs…, no unexpected, undesirable, or malicious actions taken on the system upon which such a DVD… is used.”
Intellikey Labs playability and rip testing on computer operating systems and DVD players revealed 100% playability on tested DVD players representative of the mass market.
Professional Media Testing Centre (PMTC) playability and rip testing on computer operating systems and DVD players confirmed that the software powering DupliGard is effective protection from mass market ripping programs.
How Reliable Is It?
The high level of copy protection, playability and simplicity of use are key factors for DupliGard’s success. Whereas NO copy protection solution can be guaranteed to be 100% un-rippable, DupliGard provides a significant “speed bump” to deter ripping and copying of video content and has been adopted by leading content owners across the world.
Independent testing has shown both a significant level of copy protection robustness with virtually 100% playability on the wide range of DVD players worldwide.
The use of poor quality generic DVDR media and its lack of playability is a greater issue than is the playability of content protected with DupliGard.
Can A Protected Disc Be Copied?
DupliGard performs very well against mass market ripping programs.
In some circumstances, when it is thought to have been ripped, playback reveals that the disc does not play all or part of the copied disc and therefore, the copy is not watchable.
How Is It Working For Customer Now?
Content owners and duplicating service providers have found the high level of copy protection and ease of use to be key factors for choosing DupliGard.
DupliGard today is helping our partners secure their video content. It minimizes both ripping and exploitation of their content, thus protecting their revenues and brands, which is fundamental in the competitive video production world.
Are There Upgrades?
Keeping ahead of the mass ripping technologies is an ongoing “arms race.” Our software research team is continually developing alternate copy deterrent strategies to keep ahead of the pirates, hackers and others who seek to steal DVD intellectual property.
Typically, two new versions of DupliGard are being developed at any one time.
Vigorous testing is performed to confirm rip deterrence and playability before any new version is released. This due diligence helps ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
How Much Illegal Copying Is There?
Optical disc piracy, a subset of the overall piracy market, is the illegal manufacturing, sale, distribution or trading of copies of motion pictures in digital disc formats including DVD, DVDR, CD, CD-R and VCD.
The problem is widespread. In fact, over 400 labs for illegal duplication and replication of audiovisual content are discovered every year in the U.S.A. alone.
In general, film copyright piracy costs the U.S. economy more than $20 billion a year.
What is CSS and How is DupliGard Different?
CSS is the Content Scramble System that is the industry approved legal standard to protect DVD video.
Pirates who illegally copy DVDs containing CSS can often be successfully prosecuted by content owners.
Unfortunately, hacker pirates can easily break the CSS copy protection scheme.
Since pirates normally do not consider the threat of prosecution as a deterrent, CSS should not be considered an effective method for stopping theft of intellectual property.
CSS provides a legal basis for prosecution and is not a technical deterrent – DupliGard is a technically complex product and provides real copy deterrence.
DupliGard Hardware Specifications
The DupliGard Hardware System provides exceptional performance to efficiently burn copy protected discs. Discs may be burned with or without DupliGard copy protection.
Adding value to your production environment, DupliGard hardware may also be used as a powerful stand-alone or networked workstation.
With optional Nuvidia installed and tested software, the system may be used for graphic design, editing, encoding, and authoring when not being used for disc duplication.

DupliGard Proprietary Software
DupliGard creates an ISO (short for ISO 9660), an international standard devised for storing data to discs which is an all-inclusive file of the disc. It then encapsulates the ISO file with a small, passive piece of software. (less than 1MB in size)
The original DVD audio and video files are not encoded in any way, so playback quality is unaffected.
The encapsulated ISO is burned with a proprietary burning program, and the finished product is a copy-protected DVD-R master disc.
DVD players read the disc normally because DupliGard is put on a section of the disc not read by DVD players.
DupliGard makes DVD ripping software think that the disc is empty, so the process is unsuccessful.
Licensing and Prices
DupliGard Software Licensing
DupliGard software is licensed by contractual agreement between Nuvidia and the purchaser of the DupliGard copy protection system. Fees for DupliGard licenses are based on a per disc basis.
The software is provided on a USB “dongle” (a flash device) which supplies the client with a number of pre-determined licenses or “burns”.
A client with multiple DupliGard systems, may choose to have the licenses installed or “split” on two or more dongles. Purchasing additional licenses is simplified by writing a proprietary HEX code, provided by Nuvidia, to the dongle.
Prepayment is required for both initial licenses and additional licenses. Software and encryption upgrades are provided at no additional cost to active license holders.
